Winslet focused on 'Mind' Variety - September 18, 2002
By CLAUDE BRODESSER
Specialty label Universal Focus greenlit eclectic drama "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" late Tuesday, with Kate Winslet negotiating to join topliner Jim Carrey.
"Eternal" was penned by Charlie Kaufman, nommed for an Oscar for his 1999 USA Films (now Universal Focus) pic "Being John Malkovich."
Like "Malkovich," Kaufman's newest project is set partly in the human mind -- specifically, in the mind of a man trying to put memories of a particularly steamy relationship with his ex-mate behind him.
A spokeswoman for the U label, however, declined to comment on the "Eternal" developments, citing a policy of not commenting on pending negotiations. Nonetheless, sources say the pic is to go before cameras in January.
Winslet, repped by the William Morris Agency, next appears opposite Kevin Spacey in "The Life of David Gale" -- also a Universal release, co-financed by Intermedia Films. She's attached to "Neverland," Marc Forster's follow-up to "Monster's Ball," starring opposite Johnny Depp.
Kaufman's other unreleased opus, "Adaptation," is due to hit theaters in December. That pic's a wild comedy about a frustrated screenwriter's quest for love and subsequent emotional meltdown during a vexingly difficult adaptation of Susan Orlean's book "The Orchid Thief." The film will be released by Sony's Columbia Pictures and was largely co-financed by Intermedia Films.

Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger are the leading candidates to round out one of the most hotly sought-after ensemble casts for Civil War drama, "Cold Mountain."
Based on Charles Frazier's bestselling and National Book Award winning Civil War novel, is a co-production of Miramax, MGM, Mirage Enterprises and Bona Fide Prods.
Writer-director Anthony Minghella has been huddled in casting sessions for the last two weeks, with producers saying their priority is casting the role of Inman, a wounded soldier whose Ulysses-like journey home after the War is the main thread of the novel.
Negotiations with Tom Cruise to play Inman went South earlier this year, but the pic remains in active pre-production and is moving toward a July 2002 start date. "Cold Mountain" will be shot in Europe and the American South.
Kidman, currently Oscar nominated for her role in "Moulin Rouge" would take the role of Ada, the minister's daughter Inman left behind when he enlisted as a Confederate soldier.
Zellweger, also Oscar nominated for her perf in Miramax's "Bridget Jones Diary" could play Ruby, the drifter who becomes Ada's companion and hard-scrabble partner in eking a living the soil.
Miramax declined comment. Law, Kidman and Zellweger are all repped by CAA.

St. Louis Today - March 15, 2002
Many stars would love to get a role in the long-awaited film version of "Cold Mountain," Cormac McCarthy's stirring Civil War novel, the New York Post says. Director Anthony Minghella, best known for "The English Patient," was recently in Los Angeles meeting with Josh Hartnett, Leonardo DiCaprio, Eric Bana, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Connelly, Kate Winslet and Renee Zellweger.
Note: The author of Cold Mountain is actually Charles Frazier.
Here's a review of the book from Amazon. Minghella directed The English Patient and The Talented Mr. Ripley.
Charles Frazier's debut novel, Cold Mountain, is the story of a very long
walk. In the waning months of the Civil War, a wounded Confederate veteran
named Inman gets up from his hospital bed and begins the long journey back
to his home in the remote hills of North Carolina. Along the way he meets
rogues and outlaws, Good Samaritans and vigilantes, people who help and
others who hinder, but through it all Inman's aim is true: his one goal is
to return to Cold Mountain and to Ada, the woman he left behind. The object
of his affection, meanwhile, has problems of her own. Raised in the rarified
air of Charleston society, Ada was brought to the backwoods of Cold Mountain
by her father, a preacher who came to the country for his health. Even after
her father's death, Ada remains there, partly to wait for Inman, but partly
because she senses her destiny lies not in the city but in the North
Carolina Blue Ridge.
Thank you Dakota for contributing on this story.
Status: This film has been on the slate since 1997. However, it finally does have a shoot date of July 2002 and a possible Fall 2003 release.
Tom Cruise was originally attached to the project with Renee Zelwegger. Cruise split in January for another role.
