Kate Visits Ringling Brothers Circus
THE GREAT Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey Circus is in New
York until April 13 and this time the event is enjoying visits from
big movie actors. Kate Winslet, the "Titanic" star, has
attended twice. The first time she wore a red wig while her current
co-star, Jim Carrey, wearing a beanie, did a scene with her to represent
the annual Elephant Walk through the Queens Midtown Tunnel. Winslet
and Carrey are filming a movie called "Eternal Sunshine of the
Spotless Mind."
Kate's second visit was in Madison Square Garden itself with her
entire family. They went backstage to meet Mark Oliver Gebel and his
four-legged performers in The Greatest Show on Earth. Kate is doing
preliminary research for a movie on the life of tiger-trainer Mabel
Stark. Kate will star is this film based on the book "The Final
Confession of Mabel Stark" by Robert Hough, to be published this
spring.

Synopsis (from Amazon.co.uk)
Mabel Stark was the greatest female tiger trainer in history. In
the 1910s and 20s, when circus was the most popular entertainment
in America, she was the biggest attraction for the Ringling Brothers
Barnum & Bailey Circus.Mabel was five-feet tall, brazen, suicidally
courageous, obsessed with tigers and sexually eccentric. In The
Final Confession of Mabel Stark, Robert Hough has used the documents
of her life to explore the mysteries of her heart. His vibrant and
moving fictional autobiography starts in 1968. Mabel is just turning
eighty and is about to lose her job. Faced with the loss of her
cats, she looks back on her life, her escapades and her tragedies,
her love affairs with tigers and men. She also confronts her darkest
secret, her guilt at committing, 'the worst thing one person can
do to another.' Now, with the end of her life in sight, there is
one thing above all else she needs to do. Mabel Stark wants to confess.
Exuberant and inventive, The Final Confession of Mabel Stark transports
its readers to an age before cinema and television, when circus
performers were superstars. It is a delightful novel and an unputdownable
biography of a gloriously idiosyncratic life.
Reviews
Robert Hough has described his book, The Final Confession of Mabel
Stark, as '98% me, 2% Mabel'. His ficionalized biography is the
basis of the upcoming film set to star Kate Winslet, who has attached
to the film prior to final completion of the script. The reviews
of the book give a glimpse into what can be expected or you can
order
the book yourself and see why it is Kate signed on prior a script.
"A circus star of the Roaring Twenties, Mabel was not quite
five feet tall and weighed just 100 pounds. Yet she brazenly stood
delivering commands to beasts that outweighed her 6:1. Her shows
featuring a dozen trained tigers were headliners, and Mabel was
known across America. She was the star of the big-top tent, with
15,000 "rubes" breathlessly watching her white-leathered
form stare a dozen killers in the teeth. "
A
Tiger Tamer's Tale - Jam Showbiz Review
"The Final Confession of Mabel Stark by Robert Hough - Mabel
Stark was one of the most famous women of her time, the centre-ring
finale act of the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey circus in
the 1920s and 1930s when circus was the most popular form of entertainment
in North America. Barely five feet tall, blonde, lithe, dressed
in her trademark skintight white leather jumpsuit, Stark made
her mark in a man's world. She was brazen, courageous to the point
of self-destruction, obsessed with tigers, addicted to drugs,
and sexually eccentric. Hough has created a compelling fictional
autobiography of Mabel Stark, leaping from the documents of her
life into the mysteries of her heart, and into the carnival world
of the raveling circus. "
