Mini Review: Eternal sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a brilliant romantic comedy. Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey do a phenomenal job of bringing to life the star-crossed lovers Joel and Clem. Michel Gondry brings a hearbreaking film to life that is the most realistic portrayal of what it is like to fall in love that I have yet seen. It's tender, endearing, charming, funny, and full of great moments. It's definitely one to see with your sweetheart and will help you to remember those precious first moments that made you fall in love to begin with. Kate Winslet is fantastic in a break from her usual brooding characters. Clem is real, funny, and larger than life.

Enigma
 Kate as Hester |

Unknown to his colleagues, Jericho has another equally baffling enigma of his own to unravel: Claire, the woman he loves, has disappeared from Bletchley in the precise moment that a spy is suspected. Tom turns to Hester, Claire's best friend, to help him to unravel the mysteries.
Review: A brilliant British spy thriller, Enigma, brings to life the brain of the British WWII defensive against Germany. Bletchly Park is home to their 'think tank' a home to de-coders and those receiving their enemies text. Dougray Scott and Kate Winslet are convincing in their roles as code breaker and feisty secretary. Their rambles through the English countryside in search of a lost friend are compelling and fun to watch. Definitely a must for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Quills
 Kate as Madeline |

She helps to get de Sade's writings out to the people. Joaquin Phoenix, and Michael Caine also star. Geofrey Rush will be starring as de Sade. There is a sort of love triangle between de Sade (Rush), Madeline le Clerc (Winslet), and de Coulemer (Phoenix). Kate has said that the film is much more funny than you would think. The film is considered dark as well. The film is currently on post-production. Filming finished the last week of October 1999.
Review: Quills is a film that sticks to the details, tough to stomach at times. It is a well made period piece with wonderful sets, beautiful locations, and intense acting from major stars. Kate Winslet and Geoffrey Rush are compelling to watch as you can almost see the sparks between the two. Due to the perverse nature of de Sade I caution viewers against watching this film late in the evening. It left me reeling and I haven't been able to watch it a sexond time due to the overwhelmingly bad feelings it leaves me with.
1999
Holy Smoke
 Kate as Ruth Barron |
Synopsis: The movie hasn't been released yet, but the basic story is known. It a story of a young Austrailian girl, Ruth Barron, who goes backpacking in India and discover a cult. She decides to join and wants to marry the cult leader, Baba. She writes to her family excited about the event and they call her home under false pretenses to have her "deprogrammed". The programmer is played by Harvey Keitel.
Review: Holy Smoke is a fun ride until Keitel joins the picture. I enjoyed many 'bits' of this film, but found on the whole that it was hard to understand the point. Jane Campion, the director, seemed to have a very BIG agenda for this film, and it gets lost. However, there are some very enjoyable Kate moments in her only modern role to date. Her character is fun and hateable at the same time and a refreshing break from her period roles. She let's loose here. Caution: some excessive nudity. Don't watch this with your parents!
Hideous Kinky
 Kate as Julia |
Synopsis: The story is based on the auto-biographical novel by Esther Freud, great grand-daughter of Sigmund. The story tells the tale of a mother who takes her two daughters to Marakesch in the '70's. She is seeking an escape from England and a failed relationship.
Review: This is a great, colorful movie. I have only seen it in German, so I didn't get to hear Kate Winslet's voice, but I loved it. It's a very cute film and it has a lesson. It's worth seeing to see Kate Winslet's performance, because it is so much different than any other film you will see.
1997
Titanic
Kate as Rose Dewitt Bukater |
Synopsis: It is almost unecessary to write the synopsis of the story of the movie Titanic. It is the story of a young America woman, Rose Dewitt Bukater, who sails on the Titanic with her fiancé to return to America to wed. She feels trapped by her surroundings and her life. The story of the movie follows her life as she embraces the true meaning of living.
Review: It doesn't need to be said that Titanic is an excellent film! The story is watch caught me. Kate Winslet and Leonardo Dicaprio show an intensity and a realness to their characters that isn't often seen in films. They are 17 year olds and actually talk as such, and act as such. None of the false Hollywood bravado. These are real people who it is easy to connect with. If this movie doesn't touch your heart than maybe you don't have one. It is a story of love, and most importantly of Life!
1996
Hamlet
 Kate as Ophelia |
Synopsis: This is a hard story to explain if you haven't read Shakespeare's Hamlet. The story is about the monarchy in Denmark. The movie starts with the King, Hamlet father, Hamlet dead and a wedding celebration. The wedding is that of young Hamlet's Uncle and his mother. Things just get more complicated from there as Hamlet seeks to understand his father's untimely death.
Our Review: Hamlet is a great movie! I just loved the use of the mirrors and the sets were so beautiful! Kenneth Branagh, as Hamlet, and Kate Winslet, as Ophelia are stunning together. The cast is star-studded and so extremely impressive. This movie is a must see for everyone, especially the Shakespeare fans!
Jude
 Kate as Sue Bridehead |
Synopsis: Jude is based on the book "Jude The Obscure" by Thomas Hardy. The premise of the story is a boy named Jude who dreams of more than his life offers. He makes a mistake early and his life gets even harder than before. He meets Sue and begins to realize himself.
Our Review: Jude is a great movie. It is a tough subject. Thomas Hardy never wrote another book after this one, because of the critical nature of it's reception. It is a tough movie, a tough story. Kate is truly brilliant in this role. She shines, it's one of her absolute best performances!
1995
Sense and Sensibility
 Kate as Marianne Dashwood |
Synopsis: S&S is based on the Jane Austen novel by the same name. It is a story of two sisters who use sense and sensibility as a guiding precept in their lives. The story follows their lives and their loves.
Our Review: S&S is culturally a very great movie to watch. You can learn a lot abou that time period in English history and culture. I loved this film, but not from the first viewing. I couldn't understand Kate's character and how she could be so silly. Later in life I understand the film better. This is something that is great for mothers, daughters, girlfriends, and women should watch together! This is Kate Winslet's first Academy Award nominated role.
A Kid In King Arthur's Court
Kate W. as Princess Sarah |
Synopsis: A Kid in King Arthur's Court is Disney's interpretation of Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court". The premise is a modern teenager who is stuggling with believing in himself who ends up being back in Arthur's England. His job is to put the kingdom back together.
Our Review: This is a GREAT film for your kids! Kate's part isn't large, but she's sweet and beautiful as always. This isn't exactly your traditional adults' movie, but I loved it. There is a lesson to be learned here and it moved me.
1994
Heavenly Creatures
 K. Winslet as Juliet Hulme |
Synopsis: Heavenly Creatures is the story of two school girls who form an intense friendship which ends in a murder. It is based on the true story of a crime that shocked New Zealand in the 1950's.
Our Review: This movie is Excellent! Kate Winslet performs well, and her companion in the film, Melanie Lynskey, matches her perfectly. These two young women, in their first movie, show a great capacity for acting. The movie is so entertaining at times that it is hard to remember that it is based on a true story.
