JOHN SPENCE , Daily Telegraph

THE real enigma here is not so much the infamous German coding machine as the mysterious Claire, who leads Dougray Scott into a murky espionage mystery. Adapted by Tom Stoppard from Robert Harris's novel, Enigma is set in the top-secret decoding centre at Bletchley Park in 1943.

Tom Jericho (Scott), the brilliant cryptanalyst who first cracked the Enigma code, is recalled to duty from a nervous breakdown caused by an infatuation with fellow worker Claire (Saffron Burrows).

At stake are the Allied convoys supplying Britain now that the Germans have suddenly changed the code and the British Navy has no idea where the enemy submarines are lurking.

As Tom races to break the new code it becomes obvious that there's a traitor at Bletchley.

Is it Claire, who has gone missing from the base, or one of his fellow analysts? With some help from mousey Hester (Kate Winslet), Tom will crack both puzzles at the 11th hour.

Note: My good friend Matt has rented Enigma on DVD in Australia and had this to say about the extras on the disc:

I was actually suprised, there were allot of extras and it even had an easter egg (a hidden feature not marked in the special features section)

There was Raw Footage from it and it was just like footage of stuff being filmed, or discussing a scene. Kate was in it quite a bit. Then in the cast section you could go to interviews and here about 10 mins of vids on Kate talking about the film. I should of captured some caps for you. And there was like the trailer and there was another one and it was like a featurette.

It was cool. Kate had me laughing through it even though it was kinda serious.
