Gerry Hambling To Edit 'The Life of David Gale'

November 8, 2001

By Erin Lauten

Six-time Oscar-nominated editor Gerry Hambling, A.C.E. is cutting "The Life of David Gale" for Universal Pictures and director Alan Parker. Production is under way in Austin, Texas. No word yet on a release date.

In "The Life of David Gale," Kevin Spacey plays Dr. David Gale, a philosophy professor who is staunchly opposed to the death penalty. By a quirk of fate, he winds up on death row after being falsely convicted of murdering activist Constance Harraway (played by Laura Linney). The story is told in a series of flashback sequences which unfold as Gale tells his tale to a reporter (Kate Winslet). Michael Seresin ("Angela's Ashes") is the cinematographer.

This film is Hambling's fourteenth collaboration with Parker. The two have been teaming to bring us films since they first paired up for 1976's "Bugsy Malone." They went on to make films like "Midnight Express" (1978), "Fame" (1980), "Pink Floyd: The Wall" (1982), "Birdy" (1984), "Mississippi Burning" (1988), "Come See the Paradise" (1990), "The Committments" (1991), "The Road to Wellville" (1994), "Evita" (1996) and most recently "Angela's Ashes" (1999). Their collaborations have led to five Oscar nominations and five BATFA nominations for Hambling. (He took home the BAFTA for "Midnight Express," "Mississippi Burning" and "The Committments.") In 1998, the American Cinema Editors honored Hambling with its Career Achievement Award.
