Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Script Review
September 21, 2002
Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.
Looks like Universal Focus just gave the greenlight to the new film ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, based on a hyper-original script by the one and only Charlie Kaufman (ADAPTATION, CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND, BEING JOHN MALKOVICH). Also looks like they cast Kate Winslet as the female lead according to VARIETY.
Meanwhile, KMOOCH has checked in with a quick look at what exactly this project is all about. Sounds interesting to me...
“How happy is the blameless Vestal's lot!
The world forgetting, by the world forgot:
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
Each prayer accepted, and each wish resign'd.”
-Alexander Pope
SPOILERS AHEAD!!
Hey Harry,
Just read the script to ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND. I don’t know what is going on in that mind of Charlie Kaufman but the guy is fucking brilliant. It is a MEMENTO and BEING JOHN MALKOVICH thing. The movie all starts with a guy name Joel Barish, a shy, gaunt 30 something year old who had a relationship with a girl named Clementine Kruczynski who is a eccentric 30 something woman who is pretty much the total opposite of Joel. But hey you know what they say... opposites do attract, and so did these two. But it all did not work out and after a terrible breakup Clementine goes and gets a special treatment that takes away all the memories of her’s and Joel’s relationship. When Joel finds out about what Clementine did, he can’t take it so he gets the same treatment done to him. Now this treatment works in a very interesting way. Joel goes into a deep sleep and goes back to all the memories he had with Clementine from the end to the beginning, and it all gets erased and by morning he would have never known she existed. During the procedure Joel realizes how much he loves her and tries to hide Clementine from getting completely erased. You confused? So am I. I had to read the script a couple of times to figure it all out. I like how Charlie Kaufman wrote this script. It is a kind of a Comedy, Drama thing because the script does have strange humor in it like a lot of Charlie Kaufman movies. It seems like they already cast Jim Carrey to play the part of Joel (who sort of reminded me of the character Truman that Jim played in THE TRUMAN SHOW) and I think it’s a good idea. I can totally see Jim playing this part. I am very curious to see who will play the part for Clementine, who is no goody two shoes. I really am very interested to see how the movie will turn out.
Till next time, all...
