The cascading floral detail top of Kate Winslet's fiery red Ben de Lisi number was divine.

The Piet Mondrian Mention for Best Use of a Primary and/or Solid Color goes to Kate Winslet and Helen Mirren. Winslet’s sinuous red dress by Ben De Lisi had just the right amount of detail in the roses over the shoulder. Mirren, in Giorgio Armani, shows that style doesn’t stop (or sometimes, even start) by 40.

Natural, soft makeup
With a few garish exceptions, celebrities chose natural looks to go with their retro-glam gowns. Kate Winslet, Halle Berry, Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger were just a few big names who went fresh-faced for the evening.

JOB of the week has to be that of Jane Lambert, of the redoubtable haberdashery department at John Lewis in Oxford Street. With her team of seamstresses, Lambert, a Bond Street-trained dressmaker, spends a probably unhealthy amount of time scouring every celebrity magazine and awards ceremony in search of the iconic dress. Then they rustle up passable copies to entice the star-struck among us into their lair. By tomorrow they’ll have whipped up Kate Winslet’s delicious, red Ben de Lisi — widely seen as one of the few successes of this year’s Oscars.

Kate Winslet’s Ben De Lisi frock spent all night clashing with the red carpet, but looked pretty good on her. She can sometimes make some real frock horrors, often favouring too-small trouser suits. Winslet hadn’t won, but there was nothing about her that said she’d lost.

Best Hair!
SHOWSTOPPING SPARKLE: Kate Winslet, 26, tucks her long hair into a loose, low-hanging bun. Not only does the 'do suit her sweet features, but she also gets to show off the multi-carat rocks on her ears.

Flying the flag for British dress sense was Kate Winslet in a glam red slinky number. She looked like she's shed a few inches and rocked up with her new man Sam Mendes.

One of the most sunning stars of the evening, Kate Winslet was striking with blonde hair and a red gown with a single garland shoulder sash by British designer Ben Delisi.
“This was my first choice,” said the nominee. “I wanted to wear something elegant and comfortable, and I’m certainly comfortable. As for elegant, you have to tell me.”
Yes, darling, there’s no doubt about that. Now maybe you could give Gwyneth Paltrow a few fashion tips. The what-was-I-thinking award goes to the lanky star who donned an unflattering see-through gown that left little to the imagination.

But at the Oscars, folks like their glamour the old-fashioned way. They don't want it looking as though it just naturally sprouted. They want it polished, perfumed and glossy. And so women such as Kate Winslet in a red, one-shoulder Ben de Lisi sheath, Halle Berry in a feminine and sexy Elie Saab floor-length merlot gown with a train, Renee Zellweger in a black strapless Carolina Herrera ball gown and Jada Pinkett Smith in a vintage gown won more universal praise.

Kate Winslet, meanwhile, wore the color of passion. Posing with her new man, British director Sam Mendes, she was radiant in a strapless red gown with silk roses trailing over her shoulder.

British actress Kate Winslet might have missed out in the best supporting actress category at the Oscars but she was a hit on the red carpet with the fashion photographers.
The flash bulbs exploded as she arrived with her new partner - the director Sam Mendes - wearing a bias-cut Ben de Lisi red dress with a single floral strap.

Kate Winslet was the picture of Hollywood glamour in a simple, sleek red gown by British designer Ben de Lisi. With a single, angled strap of flowers and feathers, the dress slid perfectly over her newly streamlined physique, spilling into an asymmetrical ruffled flounce. Her blond hair was pulled back into a low bun, showcasing simple diamond earrings and beautifully understated makeup.

Kate Winslet stunned the camera in a bright red gown with a floral sash that crossed her neckline. Hair and makeup were understated, allowing for only the red to carry Winslet's look.

Kate Winslet -- For pure, timeless Oscar style, though, the award goes to Kate Winslet. Perhaps it's that she has perpetrated such unfortunate fashion misses in the past, or maybe it's just that she's finally found a balanced way to showcase her angelic beauty. Her red Ben de Lisi column gown with a bold but not brash vine of silk roses conjured images of a Grecian goddess. She looked svelte, womanly and sophisticated (which is more than we can say for a washed out, distracted Nicole Kidman).

Kate Winslet
Named one of the Best Dressed We need at least one shot of pure va-va-va-voom red at the Oscars, and this year Kate took that responsibility on her shoulders -- with class. The Titanic beauty owned the red carpet in a fiery dress to match. With just one strap adorned with flirty flowers, this gown had originality as well as a certain sultry seductiveness. Her blond tresses were softly gathered to complete the look of pure glam.

The only notable exception to subdued colors was Kate Winslet, who wore a red gown with a floral strap; it was lovely, but really didn't bring out her beauty as much as some other gown could have. Most actresses, from Julia Roberts to Marisa Tomei to Sharon Stone to Marcia Gay Harden, wore black or navy, with Stone's fringed Versace the highest on the glamour scale.

Lady in Red
Iris Supporting Actress nom Kate Winslet makes an indelible impression in a vibrant crimson one-shouldered flamenco-style frock by Ben de Lisi. All that's missing are some castanets and a guitar player. Olé!

RADIANT IN RED: Kate Winslet, 26, a Best Supporting Actress nominee (for Iris), is stunning in her strapless red gown accented with an Hawaiian-style floral strap. She said she was actually quite comfortable in it, but admitted, "I wouldn't like to attempt to pee at this point."

Best Dressed: Kate Winslet
Surprise! Who'd have expected Winslet, the Oscar nominee who assiduously avoids being a slave to fashion, to stroll away our top honors as the red carpet's best-dressed star? Kate made a titanic impression in her striking tomato red dress by Ben de Lisi. With its long, flowing train, the gown's chic yet colorful pizzazz give it a distinct pop perfectly suited to the red carpet. Completely complementary to her titian hair and fair complexion, the gown sported a barely there strap overflowing with flowers, a fresh twist on the floral trend of the moment. This from a gal who said she was just to hoping to wear shoes that didn't make her feet hurt! Perhaps thanks to the influence of her frock-friendly 2-year-old daughter Mia, Kate is at long last an English rose in full bloom.

Kate Winslet, who arrived with partner Sam Mendes, turned out in a red gown with a single floral strap. Commenting on the comfort level of the elegant number, the 26-year-old actress said: “I wouldn’t like to pee in this.” Kate, who is up for the best supporting actress gong for Iris, also revealed she had not prepared a speech, after having been nominated twice before but being unsuccessful on both occasions.

Kate Wins It!! - Best Dressed Choice
KATE WINSLET, 26, delighted the crowd in a gorgeous £2,200 red gown by Ben de Lisi.
With a delicate floral strap draped over her shapely shoulders, she looked full of confidence and sex appeal and gets our vote for style sensation of the night.
Designer Ben said: “Kate wanted the breathless, statuesque feeling which is why we went for the boned corset.”
Although Kate carried off the look effortlessly, she was heard to say: “I’m glad I don’t need a pee.”
[The Sun]
Kate Winslet took the precaution of hiring not one but two stylists — Jessica Paster, one of the Oberführers of the Hollywood stylist brigade; and Cheryl Konteh, of British In-Style magazine. Reckless — given the way that these stylists all seem to hate one another and the dastardly stunts they pull to ensure their client gets the best dress — but it paid off.
Winslet’s red crepe dress, sourced by Konteh, with its twist of silk flowers snaking over one shoulder, looked perfect — classically alluring, not stiff and over-constructed like that hideous green Givenchy thing she wore a few years back, which covered her arms, back and most of her front.
But that was Plump Kate. Now we’re on to Slimmeddown-post-Jim Kate, which her cunningly corseted de Lisi showed off beautifully.
[The Times]
Kate Winslet was another knock-out, in a vivid strapless red sheath (just a single light vine of matching red leaves at an oblique angle across one shoulder) rolled at the bustline and falling, heavily enough to swing in that sensuous way of weighty fabric, with every step she took.

The 2002 Sidelines Best Oscar Frock Award goes to: Cameron Diaz, for her gorgeous bohemian floaty wrap thing. Runner up: Nicole Kidman, just because we adore her so. An honourable mention to Kate Winslet for her pretty red dress.

If an English Rose is going to wear color, she could do worse than choose a pleasantly quirky, tomato-red shade. Kate Winslet was radiant in Ben de Lisi - and we loved the flower-festooned shoulder strap.
[New York Post]
Glamorous and unfussy with a simple hairstyle and diamond stud earrings, Winslet looked every inch the screen goddess, a coup for de Lisi, a US born designer based in London.
