Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes on the red carpet. |
Kate Winslet was anounced as a Golden Globe nominee on December 20, 2001. She was nominated for her work in Iris as 'Best Supporting Actress in a Drama'. Her fellow nominees are Jennifer Connelly, Cameron Diaz, Marissa Tomei, Hellen Mirren, and Maggie Smith. Kate Winslet's Iris co-stars Jim Broadbent and Judi Dench were also nominated for their work.
The Red Carpet
Kate Winslet arrived on the red carpet with boyfriend Sam Mendes, director of the famed American Beauty. The two were first seen together in December of 2001 at the premiere of Iris.
Blow by Blow.
Kate Winslet's category was first off the bat, anounced by Halle Berry. It was over very very quickly. Transcription:
Halle Berry: Here are the nominees for best performance by an actress in a supporting role in a motion picture: Jenniver Connelly, A Beautiful Mind, Cameron Diaz, Vanilla Sky, Helen Mirren Gosford Park, Maggie Smith Gosford Park, Marissa Tomei In the Bedroom, Kate Winslet Iris.
And the award goes to - Jennifer Connelly, A Beautiful Mind..
Jennifer Connelly was very gracious and said it was an honor even to be considered with these fantastic women and thanked all of them for their beautiful performances.
Best Actor in a Supporting Role
A few categories later Jim Broadbent was up. He was totally surprised, as was Kate Hudson (who anounced the winner), to be anounced the Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. The Iris table was right near the microphone and you can clearly distinguish Kate Winslet's excited scream of joy for Jim right after the anouncement. Kate Winslet was the first to congratulate him, jumping up and giving him a hug. Then as he turned to leave putting her arm back around him and giving him a kiss on the cheek. Jim then started to go to the stage when he realized that he had forgot his wife. LOL. He then gave her a hug and went on stage to give his acceptance speech.
Jim Broadbent's Acceptance Speech
This is amazing, I couldn't be more surprised, and I really haven't got anything worked out. But I'd just like to thank the producers, the director, the writers, the fellow cast, particularly Judi Dench. Who I had so many *bleeped* scenes with and who made it so easy. Kate Winslet who made the film so wonderful even though I didn't actually act with her. But, um, Hugh Bonneville who played the younger me, which is quite a task, but - I think this reflects on him as well, because it's the whole part. And most of all I'd like to thank Richard Eyre, the director who co-wrote it and cast me in it. He's a brilliant, wonderful director and friend. And I'd like to thank my wife Anastasia who is here to support me tonight. And thank you to the Golden Globes organization. Thank you.
The camera panned to Kate when Jim thanked her and you could see she was so purely delighted with Jim's win and that her heart was racing as she was breathing very heavily. She was so incredibly happy for her co-star, whom she was sitting next to during the event.
Presenter
Kate Winslet introduced Peter Jackson's masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings. She was beautiful, well spoken, and missed a word towards the very end of the introduction. Peter Jackson directed her first film Heavenly Creatures.
In a very cute moment Kate Winslet missed a word in her text after having beautifully gotten through the most of it. Kate slipped on 'it's likely to live forever' by adding a have and shook her head, almost in note to herself of her mistake and went on. She did a beautiful job presenting the film. Very poised and eloquent.
Transcription of Kate's Presentation
In bringing to life a world of hobbits, wizards, drawfs, and elves our fifth nominated film is everything it had to be and more. Based on the beloved trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien, director Peter Jackson has created a spectacular cinematic world of good versus evil taking us all on an unforgetable adventure. Aided and abetted by the wonderful cast which includes Cate Blanchett, Sir Ian McKellan, Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, and Vigo Mortensen to name just a few. With his fellow screenwriters, Fran Walsh and Phillip Oboyens Jackson has achieved that ellusive prize a classic film from a class work of literature. And like it's literary counterpart it's likely to ha.., (shakes head and recovers thought) it's likely to live forever. Please enjoy the spectacle of The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring.
The Golden Globes.
In 1944 stars came to the Fox studios to find out what a small group of foreign journalists thought about the films of the year. And that was the beginning of what is now the world's second largest awards show. (Second only to the Academy Awards). The awards are handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association every year and are thought to be the most indicative of those who will receive Academy Award nominations.

- Kate Winslet has been nominated for Golden Globes twice before. In 1996 for Sense and Sensibility and in 1998 for Titanic.
