Kate Winslet with her Golden Camera |
The Golden Camera Awards (die Goldene Kamera) are broadcast on the government owned station of ZDF with no commercial interruptions. The entire show is in German and broadcast to a primarily German public. Ms. Winslet's and Ricki Martin's speeches were the only ones given in English. Kate's speech was dubbed over by her German film voice who has done all of her films up till now. |
The Official Word from the Jury
In theatres, "Titanic" was a worldwide success. When RTL broadcast the film on Christmas, 13 million people nationwide gathered in front of their television screens. Therefore, "Titanic" is by far the most successful movie in German television history. Her passionate acting and her warm eroticism make this movie an emotional masterpiece. She is the queen of sensibility.
A Heartfelt Introduction
Kate Winslet's Golden Camera was awarded to her by a very successful and famous German actor, Jürgen Prochnow. Mr. Prochnow's best known role is as Captain in the Wolfgang Petersen film, Das Boot. He also went on to star in English Patient, and even has a small role in Air Force One. His comments are particularly heartfelt and complimentary to Ms. Winslet.
His Introduction: "I've had lots of adventures. However, even now, my knees are shaking, because the winner, whom we'll meet in just a moment, is the incarnation of sensibility. She played the female lead in the most successful movie of all time. Still, she wouldn't let herself be taken over by the dream factory - Hollywood.
In "Hideous Kinky", she played a hippie mother on her quest for eternal happiness. Together with "Piano" director Jane Campion, she filmed the psychothriller "Holy Smoke". Now, her new film "Quills" is premiering at the Berlinale in which she plays the chambermaid of the notorious Marquis de Sade. American film critics have already named "Quills" the "best film" of the year. I'd certainly stand on the bow of any ship with her - except maybe a submarine!"

I really feel so honored to be here. And this is so wonderful, I can't tell you, and thank you for your wonderful applause and the speech you made.
I just really want to say a few words, which is to say, number one: thank you for inviting me here, thank you for the Golden Camera jury, and also to say that all my life I felt very, very lucky. And I felt lucky, because I have loved my job all of my life, from the time that I have done it. And I've always enjoyed it. And I've had oppurtunities to work with the most incredible actors and directors, who've always really inspired me.
And, when people mention Kate Winslet, they say things like "famous", and "superstar", but those words don't really mean anything to me when it comes down to the fact that I just love acting so much. And I just want to thank all the people that go and see movies for letting me do that. And to hope that younger actors will keep making the right choices and being determined to do what they want to do: acting, because they believe in it. Because those are the people who will give us the great performances, from now on until forever.
So, thank you so much for this!
