Stars’ Wedding Dress Costumes on Display

Wedding dresses worn in drama productions by stars such as Kate Winslet and Liz Hurley will feature in a new exhibition of bridal attire opening this week.

On display at the National Trust’s Killerton House, near Exeter, will be examples of wedding dresses from the last 300 years.

They will include clothes used in such dramas as Sense And Sensibility, Daniel Deronda and Jane Eyre.

Opening from April 12 to November 2, the exhibition will also feature bonnets, veils, head-dresses, shoes and wedding photographs.

Visitors will learn that it was not until the second half of the 19th century that the white wedding became established, although white – initially – was the preserve of the wealthier middle and upper classes.

A National Trust spokeswoman said: “Although formal, the wedding gown followed fashion and was often recycled after marriage as a suitable dress for a first presentation at court as a married woman.

“Wedding veils, if not passed down through generations of the family, might also be used again in another form and were altered to make items such as christening robes particularly during the early 20th century.”
