Winslet happy with her figure
February 12, 2003

Kate Winslet has said she is happy with her fuller figure after a magazine altered photos to make her look thinner.

The Titanic star is famous for defending the appearance of women who do not comply with the vogue for stick-thin models.

And she hopes fans do not now think she has changed her tune after men’s magazine GQ admitted airbrushing her covergirl photos in last month’s edition.

“I don’t want people to think I was a hypocrite and had suddenly gone and lost 30 pounds, which is something I would never do, and more importantly don’t want to look like that,” she told GMTV.

“I sat there with the magazine cover and a Polaroid that was taken on the day going, ‘What’s the difference?’

“They made my legs look quite a bit thinner. They also made me look about six feet tall, which I’m not, I’m 5ft 6ins, and you know I have got muscly legs, me and my sisters and my mum are quite proud of our muscly, strong legs and hips and all the rest of it.”

The 27-year-old, who starred in Iris last year, was picked on at school for being overweight and was nicknamed Blubber.

She lost four-and-a-half stone following the birth of her daughter Mia in 2000.

The following year she split from husband Jim Threapleton and later became involved with director Sam Mendes, her current boyfriend.

Winslet told GMTV she makes only one film per year and would only be on set for seven to eight weeks at a time – often taking her young daughter with her.

And she said she had a good relationship with Mia’s father, as does her young daughter despite the split.

“She has a very good relationship with him, which is massively important, that she grows up knowing that her mum and dad are absolutely the most important people in her life,” she said.

“That’s always been the case and continues to be the case.

“I’m in New York shooting a film and her dad’s been visiting her, it’s been great.

“She’s a very very happy little girl and I’m having a wonderful time being her mother.”

Winslet will soon be seen in her new film The Life Of David Gale alongside Kevin Spacey.
