KATE Winslet and Sam Mendes are telling friends they plan to wed.

They've pencilled in a date in 2003, but are waiting for the dust to settle on Kate's divorce from Jim Threapleton.

My spies overheard Kate and American Beauty director Sam, 35, telling friends about their plans over dinner at top Los Angeles restaurant Spago.

"Kate was saying how much Sam adores her daughter Mia and vice versa," said one diner. "But they don't want to be seen rushing into anything."

Kate, 27, stunned everyone by splitting from Jim in September. By November she and Mendes were very much an item. All a bit hasty wouldn't you say?

May 19, 2002 (WENN via COMTEX) -- Actress KATE WINSLET and her film director beau SAMUEL MENDES have been overheard discussing plans for a wedding in a Los Angeles restaurant.

They told friends they've penciled in a date for 2003, according to British tabloid newspaper THE Sunday MIRROR.

They quote a fellow diner at SPAGO says, "Kate was saying how much Sam adores her daughter MIA and vice versa.

"But they don't want to be seen rushing into anything."

The British beauty split from husband JIM THREAPLETON in September (01) and was publicly dating Mendes by November the same year.

She divorced Threapleton in December (01).
