Kate Winslet doesn't like her hit single
February 19, 2002

Kate Winslet says she would not have bought her debut single What If.

The actress says she prefers dance music.

And she says she felt more comfortable singing in the shower than in the studio - even though What If reached the top ten.

The Titanic star told Austrian magazine News: "I can't really sing, as a little girl I used to mime to artists and sing their songs, but I was never very good."

She said What If came about by accident: "I did the voiceover for the animation film Christmas Carol and 18 months later the producer approached me and asked me to do a song."

Kate admits the song is not one she would buy herself: "I prefer house or dance music, music that is interesting with good lyrics."

Kate shocked the showbiz industry last September when she announced her separation from husband Jim Threapleton: "We were already leading separate lives, a split was inevitable but it seemed to cause a bigger fuss than the Cruise/Kidman separation," she said.

Winslet slams her own single

Beautiful vocal cords seek 'interesting' lyrics

Kate Winslet has admitted she wouldn't have bought her own debut single, What If. Although the Disney-style track from A Christmas Carol made it into the top 10, the curvy actress has denied that she plans a musical career, saying she feels more comfortable singing in the shower than in the studio. 'I can't really sing,' she said. 'As a little girl I used to mime to artists and sing their songs, but I was never very good. I did the voiceover for A Christmas Carol and 18 months later the producer approached me and asked me to do a song.' One reviewer went so far as to praise the 'sheer beauty of Kate's vocal cords', but if they're ever to go back into the recording studio, it will be for something quite different. 'I prefer house or dance music,' she says, 'music that is interesting with good lyrics.'
