Nominations abound with little oddities
February 13, 2002

This is only the second time in Oscar history that two people have been nominated for playing the same person in the same movie. This year it is Kate Winslet (supporting) and Judi Dench (lead), both playing the real-life Iris Murdoch in Iris.

The other time it happened was in 1998, when Kate Winslet (lead) and Gloria Stuart (supporting) did the same thing in Titanic, both playing the fictional Rose. So it has been pulled off only twice — and Winslet did it both times.

But the 26-year-old shrugged it off to luck. She and her visiting mum were playing with Winslet's daughter, Mia, 1, at home in London when her agent called. "There was a lot of screaming, hugging and clapping. Mia was rolling around, thrilled that everyone was excited but didn't quite understand why."

Winslet was also thrilled that her co-stars Dench and Jim Broadbent were nominated: "I'd probably have thrown myself in the River Thames if they hadn't been. Their performances are so heartbreakingly brilliant."
