February 3, 2002

Christopher Lee has been honoured for his contribution to the UK's film industry.

He received a special achievement gong at the Evening Standard British Film Awards.

The 79-year-old actor's career has spanned over half a century and includes more than 200 movies.

Many of his most memorable roles were in the Hammer horror films in which he played Frankenstein's Monster and Dracula.

He is also known to a new generation of movie goers as Saruman the White in the recent blockbuster, Lord of the Rings.

Lee, who once played Bond villain Francisco Scaramanga in The Man With The Golden Gun, received his special achievement award from the current 007, Pierce Brosnan.

The annual Evening Standard British Film Awards recognise the achievements in homegrown cinema over the last 12 months and were hosted this year by comedian Jack Dee.

The prestigious Best Film Award went to Gosford Park, directed by Robert Altman.

Bridget Jones's Diary scooped two awards, Best Screenplay and the Peter Sellers Award for Comedy.

Kate Winslet was named Best Actress for her performances in Iris, Enigma and Quills, while Linus Roache took the Best Actor gong for his role in Pandemonium.
