Teen People
Gabbing With Kate Winslet
August 1999
Life post-Titanic is going swimmingly for movidom's most famous shipwreck survivor
Teen People: How did the gigantic sussess of Titanic change your life?
Kate Winslet: I never knew it was going to be like THAT. I now find myself saying, "God, I'm part of a film that going to go down in history."
Teen People: Would you like to work with Leonardo DiCaprio again?
Kate: I'd do it. He's brilliant. There are some actors who can just do it completely naturally, and he's one of them.
Teen: You met your husband, Jim Threapleton, because he was the third assistant director on your most recent release, Hideous Kinky. How did he approach a big star like you?
Kate: He hadn't seen anything I'd done before he came to Morocco [to shoot the film]. I loved that. He didn't have some preconceived notion of a movie star. I never think of myself that way anyway. I think of myself as Kate and try to lead as normal a life as I possibly can.
Teen: Where will we see you next?
Kate: Last year, I filmed Holy Smoke, which was directed by Jane Campion [The Piano] and costars Harvey Keitel. I play a 20-year-old Australian girl who's on a spiritual quest. I'm really pleased with what I've seen of it.
Teen People: What do you look for in a role?
Kate Winslet: It's always whether the story is strong and the character grabs me and would be a challenge. I'd never do something that I thought I could do standing on my head. I'm only 23, and I have a lot to learn about acting--and about life.
