Winslet’s Westwood rumour rubbished
October 8, 2008
In another example of rumour being reported as fact, Kate Winslet has denied she is to play the punk pioneer
Another day, another tabloid story of a high profile actor taking a high profile role getting blown out of the water. Kate Winslet has denied she is to star as Vivienne Westwood in a forthcoming movie about the fashion designer’s life.
As we reported earlier this week, The Sun newspaper announced on Monday that Winslet had signed on to play the punk clothing pioneer. We did sort of warn you then it might be spurious, and now Winslet’s spokesperson has said it almost certainly is, describing the article as “not at all true”.
The Sun report quoted a spokesperson for Westwood insisting that Winslet had taken the role, but a (presumably different) spokesperson told People.com: “The script has not even been finished yet, let alone casting. Kate Winslet was just one of many names that were mentioned as possibles to play Vivienne, but this whole thing has been blown completely out of proportion.”
To be fair to The Sun, the story seems to have originated in Vogue magazine. But it’s just the latest tall tale to rebound around the world, only to be discredited a few days’ later. Most recently, suggestions that Cher was to play Catwoman in a sequel to Christopher Nolan’s box office superhero megalith The Dark Knight were re-reported across the globe after being first published in the British tabloids. Warner Bros has said that Nolan hasn’t even signed on for a new film himself.
