Keira's dress in Atonement

The emerald green dress worn by Keira Knightley in Atonement has been voted the best film costume of all time.

The bias-cut, backless silk gown had fashion editors raving when it first appeared on screen last year.

Knightley’s character, Cecilia Tallis, wore it during a pivotal scene in Joe Wright’s period drama, which is tipped for Oscar nominations.

The dress was designed by the film’s costumier, Jacqueline Durran, who studied documentary and fashion photography from the 1930s for inspiration.

It was voted top in a survey by Sky Movies and In Style magazine.

Marilyn Monroe’s white dress from The Seven Year Itch, famously worn as she stood over a subway grate, was second.

The little black Givenchy dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany’s was third.

Fourth was the pair of skin-tight trousers sported by a transformed Olivia Newton-John in the final scene of Grease.

Kate Winslet’s blue gown from Titanic was fifth, followed by Diane Keaton’s quirky tie and waistcoat combination in Annie Hall.

The rest of the top ten featured Nicole Kidman’s satin corset from Moulin Rouge, Liza Minnelli’s stockings and bowler hat in Cabaret, Cate Blanchett’s sumptuous gown in Elizabeth: The Golden Age and Vivien Leigh’s billowing dresses in Gone With The Wind.
