Titanic 10th Anniversary Edition

DVD Review

Paramount Home Entertainment

Released: November 20, 2007

Everybody at this point knows the story of the Titanic. The unsinkable ship that hit an iceberg and ultimately sunk to the floor of the ocean, leaving many freezing to death in the ocean. The story of the Titanic was not done though as a second Hollywood version was released back in 1997 and was the most popular motion picture of all time breaking every box office record imaginable.

The story is amazingly well done as Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet fill up the screen with love, laughter, and reality in one amazingly romantic story. DiCaprio is a poor boy who by luck manages to win a ticket onto the R.M.S. Titanic at the last minute, jumping onboard just before it sets off in the ocean. Winslet plays Rose, the more fortunate girl who is in the upper-echelon in terms of social class on the ship.

The two cross paths and become lovers throughout the maiden voyage of the Titanic, right up until its ultimate demise. There is not much to say bad about this film as it is still one of my most enjoyable films to watch of all time. It is an amazing story both on the love story level between Jack and Rose as well as the story of the Titanic. These two factors combined make for an absolutely timeless film. It is amazing to think it is already ten years old.

The anniversary edition of Titanic has now been released and comes in a two-disc set. The video transfer is just as you would expect from past DVD releases for the Titanic as there is an extremely high level of quality put into the video here. The film is spread out over two discs which is a bit of a pain but it is excusable since it is such a long movie. Thankfully the quality of movie here is superb as the flesh-tones, depth of colors, contrast, etc. all look great. This is as good of a DVD release you are going to get for Titanic without making the jump to next-generation media formats such as Blu-ray or HD-DVD.

The same can be said about the audio quality which is presented in both Dolby Digital EX 5.1 tracks and DTS ES 6.1. tracks. I watched the film in both and either audio track you use and can support is equally as impressive. I am a bit more lenient towards the DTS track since it seemed to me that it gave off a bit more clear audio and sound effects in the rear channels. Either track though sounds great as the fantastic musical score is back and better than ever along with great dialogue, and the scene with the ship sinking will blow you away!

In terms of special features, any of you who already own the 3-Disc Titanic Special Collector’s Edition set which was put out not too long ago already have everything available here plus some. There are a great many special features as disc one and two both include commentary with Director James Cameron, which is a real treat if you have never heard it before.

There is also cast and crew commentary on both discs with Kate Winslet and Lewis Albernathy, along with Jon Landau, Rae Sanchini, and Gloria Stuart.

The other commentary is historical commentary by Don Lynch and Ken Marschall. I found the historical commentary to be the most intriguing of all as those who are extremely interested in Titanic itself could truly learn a lot from this.

Also included in the special features is a behind-the-scenes feature, an alternate ending, and the Celine Dion music video “My Heart Will Go On.”

Overall the special features are very well put together but as stated they are the exact set, minus disc three, that was included in the Special Collector’s Edition of Titanic released not too long ago.

Titanic has received a nice release for its tenth anniversary but unfortunately there is nothing new here to really make fans double-dip who already own the Titanic on DVD in some form, especially those with the Collector’s Edition which was a packed three-disc set. For those who have never picked up Titanic though this is a solid buy as every DVD collection has to have Titanic in it!

Film: 10

One of the most popular movies of all time and a great picture featuring a love story and the tragic story of the Titanic, an absolute classic.

Video: 9.0

This is as good as you can get for the Titanic on DVD as everything looks great!

Audio: 9.5

A great DTS audio track which packs some clear, crisp audio with great sound effects. The ship sinking sounds phenomenal.

Special Features: 8.0

The disc-set is stacked with plenty of extra but unfortunately there is nothing new that has not yet been released.

Final Score: 8.5

Recommended if you do not already own Titanic on DVD.
